As a student, you definitely don't need everything and anything there is on the market. It's easy to feel compelled to buy the best stationery, and most effective and efficient product advertised but that doesn't mean it will serve you as every student has different needs.
Knowing what you need will help budget your expenses better and minimise the weight of things you carry in your bag.
Before we start, if you are a student, I highly recommend getting an Amazon Prime membership to shop for an incredible variety of products in every category with constant offers!
Whether you are a college or university student, you can signup for only £4.49 per month (£47.49/year) with access to next-day prime delivery, prime video and prime music and 10% off majority text-books. Amazon exclusively offers a 6-month trial - in other words, the first 6 months are free! Please note, if you are not a student, you can sign up for £8.99 per month (£95/year) with more benefits!

Now that you have signed up, here are the top 5 valuable items you need for the university as seen on my TikTok (all available on Amazon)
1. Spacious bag
Let's start with the obvious, you need a strong and cute bag but multifunctional. By that, I mean a bag with various zips and pockets inside the bag. This helps better organise your items and in return actually be able to find them. Amazon offers a great variety of tote bags, backpacks and handbags in various designs and sizes but here are some I recommend:
Laptop Tote Bag - 15.6 inch Black My personal fav - it has a laptop pocket, pen inserts and zip pocket for storage. perfect to organise each item and maximise the space. £29.99
Leather Print Tote Bag / Plain Leather Tote Bag Similar to the bag above, has several pockets and is strong enough to carry a 15-inch laptop with many other items. £34 - £40
Multi-sex bag with 3 outer compartments and inside pockets. available in various designs. £34.99
Great to use if you want to take a minimal load and look cute with every outfit. £16.99 |
2. Don't underestimate A5 notebooks
No doubt you can get more written on A4 notebooks but at the same time they are a hassal to carry and take up too much space. I used A5 notebooks this year and will never go back. Yes, the page has less room but taking notes live during a lecture is messy and jibberish anyway - so why not do that on less paper and write up neatly afterwards. Plus, I switch between typing and writing depending on the module - so it works for me!
3. Weekly Diary - with Monthly Overview
This will be so helpful to get your mind together nearer to hundreds of deadlines for exams and assignments. Having a weekly planner will allow you to note deadlines in one place (rather than random places in your textbook) and track things you may need to do for the week. But having a monthly overview will also allow you to quickly skim over the current and next months. For this, I recommend:
Academic Diary 2022-2023 - A5 - Hardback This planner has a week-to-week view and end of monthly view after every month. Comes with stickers and note pages for extra notes. £6.49
Academic Diary 2022-2023 - A4 Similar to the diary above but soft back cover and is available in more colours £9.93 |
4. Card Holder
Get a card holder! You may not need it for your credit cards but it's safe to safely carry your driver's license, university ID, bus cards, railcards, any main retail point cards and spare coins/cash.
This is the only cardholder you need. It has 7 inserts with one clear and a middle cash/coins slot. Available in 15 colours. Easy to carry with your phone and carry in your pocket. £10.17 |
5. Other Accessories
Here's a list of items that not everyone may need but I do recommend having:
It keeps you warm drink warm and cold drink cool for a long time. It can be heavy to carry, so ensure you're not adding unnecessary weight and resorting to a light bottle. £15 - 25
Memory Stick - 64 to 128GB I know lot of people who have lost their work out of nowhere and didn't have backups to fall back on. This is a small stick to carry in your bag and not too expensive. Keep your important work stored - you never know. £9 - £15
You will run out of battery on your phone on random times, especially if you commute. Keep this charged and in your bag for emergencies. Alternatively, you can take a charger with you but again, on days you forget your charger plug - this will come in handy. £17.99 |
